New Year's is synonymous with spending time with family and friends, consuming alcohol, and, of course, resolutions. Inevitably, I always seem to find myself making a resolution to eat healthier and lose weight, but this year I am happy to say that I am finally on the right track. I have been eating vegan for about a month and a half now, and it has been one of the best dietary decisions I have ever made. I hope to make 2012 a completely meat, egg, and dairy free year, and to continue to make healthy and delicious meals and try awesome new restaurants.
Over the holiday season, I definitely faced my fair share of non-vegan temptations, like mouth-watering cookies from one of my student's mother's who is a professional baker (I am still a little bitter about that one). But more so than the temptations, the holidays have been filled with delicious and healthy vegan foods.
I started off with Christmas at my boyfriend's family's house, where his mom was kind enough to make vegan tortilla soup, mashed potatoes, salads, and roasted veggies galore. I was also gifted with an awesome cookbook called Quick Fix Vegetarian (GREAT vegan ideas), as well as scoop and bake peanut butter chocolate chip cookies, which were excellent.
Andrew and I then traveled to my homeland, New Jersey, where we enjoyed sushi, pasta, Wegman's (the greatest grocery store on earth for those who don't know) salad bar, and many other delicious vegan meals. We also went to New York City for a night, where there are pretty much an unlimited number of vegan restaurants. We ate lunch at
Little Lad's Cafe on the Lower East Side, which is an all vegan buffet, featuring mac and cheese, a salad bar, and many other hot and cold vegan options. It was excellent, and for only $7.99 for all you can fit on your plate, we definitely got our money's worth. We ate dinner at
The Organic Grill in the NYU area, and while I slightly regretted my order choice (eggplant rollatini) I really liked the restaurant overall. It seems though that their signature dish is their veggies burger, so next time I will be ordering that.
We capped the trip off with New Year's cocktails with my family, and dinner in Philadelphia. For the cocktail party I made a delicious appetizer, which literally took me less than 10 minutes from start to finish. I sauteed some spinach with garlic and lemon juice, then put it in pre-made, no bake phyllo shells. I topped it with some chopped sun-dried tomato, and served it up. It was delicious, and a big hit with vegans and non-vegans alike.

After that Andrew and I went to
Milah Vegetarian restaurant near Rittenhouse Square, and the food was amazing. We split the edamame dumplings and mango avocado salad to start, and we both got the roasted brussel sprouts, butternut squash, and cashew gratin as a main course. All were outstanding, especially the main course, which was unlike anything else I have ever tasted. The only downside was that we made a 9:00 reservation, and by 9:30 we were the only people left in the restaurant and the staff was shutting everything down all around us. They put on no heirs that they wanted us to get out of there-- they were basically changing into their pajamas as we ate the last bites on our entree. So we headed out much earlier than expected, with 3 extra Blue Moons in hand (it is a BYOB). Even though it was kind of bizarre that not only did they shut down at 9:30 on New Year's Eve, but they didn't call me and suggest that 9:00 may be too late for a reservation, the food was still so delicious that it pretty much makes up for it.
I thought that being a vegan would be really difficult during the holidays, which is usually my favorite food time of the year, but it was actually quite easy and delicious. I tried lots of new foods and new restaurants, but I am excited to be back in my routine of cooking and eating at home. Look for many more recipes and articles in 2012!
